Case Study

U-bike public bicycle rental system (Daejeon - South Korea)

U-bike is a public self-service bicycle rental system for the citizens of Daejeon that joins high-tech IT infrastructure and green transportation to create an eco-friendly and sustainable urban mobility solution. Daejeon Metropolitan City also expanded the bicycle exclusive routes and improved its safety to complement the U-bike system.

To be part of it, users just have to register on the website and pay a fee (using mobile phone or credit card). Then, the user can go to any U-bike bicycle station to rent and return bikes. At the kiosk, one can register different types of smart cards (such as membership cards or credit cards) and pick up the bike for rental using the smart card reader. After rental, the U-bike can be locked to the station by the user with the smart card and he/she can obtain information about the time of use, travel distance, and average speed.

Users can buy a pass for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, or 1 year. One can rent a bike from 05:00 to 24:00 and return it from 00:00 to 24:00 any day of the week.
