Case studies relevant for smart solution: Smart energy meters & management

The City of Fremantle has received more than $8 million for a trial project that focuses on using Blockchain to power renewable solar energy and water systems. Part of the funding ($2.57 million) comes from the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Programme, while the rest is private funding coming from several of the project partners.

The Celsius project was created to achieve the vision of an intelligent, competitive and liveable city, which is also resource-efficient with smart heating and cooling. The project received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration.

Cyberjaya is Malaysia’s flagship cybercity promoted in commercial leaflets as “one of the world’s leading smart cities” and as a “test bed” for the integration of ICTs into everyday life. It was created from scratch to be a smart city model for Malaysia. The project to build the city (the Multimedia Super Corridor Project) was launched by the Malaysian Government in 1996 with the goal of advancing the country’s innovation and knowledge-based economy. The cumulative investment in infrastructures and buildings in the city, until the year 2014, was $4.7 (RM17) billions.

The City of Aarhus has the ambitious goal of becoming a carbon neutral society by 2030. As Denmark’s second largest city and one of the fastest growing economies of the country, Aarhus has challenged itself to comprehensively address the issue of climate change, relying on its citizens and corporate partners to turn its vision into reality.

Songdo, as part of Incheon Free Economic Zone, is an iconic new smart city of Korea that hosts international business events and attract IT, bio-tech and R&D facilities. Its smart city initiative began in 2008 and is still ongoing with the aim for completion by 2017. The project is largely divided into six sectors including transport, security, disaster, environment and citizen interaction while other services related to home, business, education, health and care are also being developed.

The Kitakyushu Smart Community Project was developed in the Higashida district from 2010 to 2014 (5 years), comprising 26 projects and a budget of JPY 12 billion, with the aim of developing a more sustainable and low-carbon society. This Town Development project was developed around 5 concepts:

Model City Mannheim (MoMa) was a pioneering project in Germany, carried out from 2008 to 2013, that was created in the scope of the country’s E-Energy funding programme. It connects every household in the city to a smart energy network (a smart power grid) that maximises renewable energy use.

Climate change is rapidly becoming the biggest challenge that cities all over the world are facing. Carbon emissions need to be reduced and every official institution in the world has its own Climate Action Plan to achieve similar targets.

In 2013, Silicon Valley Power, the municipal power company of Santa Clara, installed about 600 transmitters all over the city to offer free Wi-Fi to its residents and visitors. This project is part of the smart power meter implementation programme (SVP MeterConnect).

Helsinki is one of the cities that is part of the 6City Strategy of Finland (along with the five other largest Finnish cities: Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku, and Oulu), which focuses on achieving a sustainable urban development based on each city's needs and strengths, finding ways to collaborate in more concrete terms. The strategy is part of the implementation of Finland’s Structural Fund Programme for Sustainable Growth and Jobs 2014–2020.

Singapore aims to become a Smart Nation, based on digital technology that improves the quality of life of its inhabitants, addressing a wide range of societal challenges. “Smart Nation is about creating new opportunities in a digital age, and transforming the way people live, work and play, so that Singapore remains an outstanding global city.”

The city of Taipei has a Smart City Project Management Office (PMO) that is responsible for the implementation of smart solutions to address some of the city’s main problems.

Wanxiang is working on the construction of a mega-city called Innova City. It will be built from scratch on the river bank in Hangzhou, capital of the Zhejiang Province, which is adjacent to Shangai. Hangzhou is the upcoming Tier 1 city in China, and it is also the city of choice for a lot of companies to locate their headquarters. Hangzhou, like Shangai, is divided in two parts by the river Qiantang. The old town is located north of the river, and the new town is located south of the river.
