Case studies relevant for smart solution: Integrated multi-modal transport

The Finnish 6City Strategy focuses on achieving a sustainable urban development, and it is carried out by the six largest cities in Finland: Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku, and Oulu. The strategy is part of the implementation of Finland’s Structural Fund Programme for Sustainable Growth and Jobs 2014–2020.

Autolib’ is the first full electric and open-access public car sharing service in the city of Paris, inaugurated in 2011 and operated by the Bolloré Group. The concept was developed to complement the city’s bicycle sharing system, Velib’, and further improve sustainable urban mobility solutions.

Big Smart Istanbul is the project of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and ISBAK to conceptualize and implement their smart city vision. Started in May 2016, the project will start the implementation phase of the roadmap in 2018 within a five-year timeline, but some projects were already launched.

The city of Guadalajara, the capital city of the State of Jalisco, is home to approximately 40% of the information and communication technologies (ICT) industry of Mexico, as a result of pioneering and long term industrial, scientific and technological policies that began in the 1970s.

The construction of the bus information system was initiated with the establishment of Seoul city’s intelligent transport system (ITS) in 2000. The contents of the public transportation sector from among a total of 5 ITS projects was to gather and analyze public transport information, allow bus operators to take advantage of the data for efficient transit operation and management to provide the users of public transit with the necessary information, and thus to enhance the transit service quality.

In 2009, the Climate Plan for Copenhagen was approved and adopted by the City Council to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2015 (target already met in 2011) and to state the vision of becoming carbon neutral by 2025. In 2012, the final CPH 2025 Climate Plan was closed with specific guidelines towards carbon neutrality.

Cyberjaya is Malaysia’s flagship cybercity promoted in commercial leaflets as “one of the world’s leading smart cities” and as a “test bed” for the integration of ICTs into everyday life. It was created from scratch to be a smart city model for Malaysia. The project to build the city (the Multimedia Super Corridor Project) was launched by the Malaysian Government in 1996 with the goal of advancing the country’s innovation and knowledge-based economy. The cumulative investment in infrastructures and buildings in the city, until the year 2014, was $4.7 (RM17) billions.

Buses have been serving citizens for decades as one of the most typical public transport modes along with subways; however, irregular service intervals due to traffic congestion have caused inconveniences and led to citizens gradually avoiding bus use.

The freeway traffic management system (FTMS) of Seoul’s urban expressway was first designed by the Seoul Development Institute (currently known as Seoul Institute) in the mid-1990s, and implemented in the 18 km leg of Olympic Expressway in July 1997. After six-month operation as pilot project, the FTMS was used in earnest since February 1998.

The project for Masdar City was launched in 2008 with the aim of developing the most sustainable eco-city in the world. Situated in a strategic location, it is only 20 minutes away from downtown Abu Dhabi, and 40 minutes from Dubai.

The Smart City Lab is a government entity of the municipality of Moscow that was formally created in August 2016 with the main goal of searching for innovations and applying new disruptive technologies that will make the city better.

The night bus, or so-called ‘Owl Bus’, was first enforced in 2013.  It provides bus services at night time, as needed by the citizens, at affordable prices by designing routes using big data. Already having an interest in the use of big data, Seoul city analyzed data obtained by the Dasan Call Center, which demonstrated that citizens had considerable interest in the traffic field.

The integration of modal fares between public  transportation means and services within public transportation means was initiated in 2004 as part of the series of reform of the public transportation system in Seoul.

PON Metro is the National Operational Programme for Metropolitan Cities in Italy that aims to address in a coordinated way all the territorial and organisational challenges faced in local contexts. There are 14 metropolitan cities involved in this programme: Turin, Genoa, Milan, Bologna, Venice, Florence, Rome, Bari, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Cagliari, Catania, Messina, and Palermo.

Curitiba is a Brazilian city with approximately 1.9 million people and it is the capital of the Paraná state. The urban growth rate was strengthened by the arrival of a lot of European immigrants throughout the nineteenth century: mainly Germans, Poles, Ukrainians and Italians, which contributed to the cultural diversity that remains today. The city experienced several urban plans and laws aimed at promoting their internationally famous growth in urban innovations and environment development.

Up until 1960s, public transportation had played a crucial role as major urban transportation. However, since 1970s a sharp rise in the number of personal cars coupled with continuous economic growth had caused severe traffic congestion.

The Smart City Challenge was launched by the U. S. Department of Transportation to all mid-population cities, focusing on the issues of future urban transportation (shared, connected, autonomous vehicles), aiming to obtain solutions to address upcoming challenges in a sustainable manner. In the city of San Francisco there will be a three-year demonstration period to complete the challenge and achieve the project’s goals.

The Smart Commute project began as an initiative from the local municipalities and regions of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas, developed from May 2004 to March 2007. With funding from the cities, Transport Canada and private sector partners, the Smart Commute Initiative aimed to promote different transportation options for commuters, such as carpooling, transit, cycling, walking and telework (this approach is called transportation demand management – TDM).

Tampere is one of the cities that is part of the 6City Strategy of Finland (along with the five other largest Finnish cities: Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Turku, and Oulu), which focuses on achieving a sustainable urban development based on each city's needs and strengths, finding ways to collaborate in more concrete terms. The strategy is part of the implementation of Finland’s Structural Fund Programme for Sustainable Growth and Jobs 2014–2020.

Seoul Subway Line 9 is a route that connects the southern part of the Han River from the east to west. The first (Phase 1) section, completed in 2009, stretches 25.5km and connects Gangnam and Gangseo, Seoul by being operated from Gimpo Airport to Banpo through Yeoui-do. The second (Phase 2) section of Eeonju, Seonjeongneung, Samsung Jungang, Bongeunsa and Sports Complex stations were additionally opened in March 2015.
