Atlanta IoT for safety and mobility (Atlanta - United States of America)
As part of the Renew Atlanta infrastructure improvement programme, the City of Atlanta has deployed technology developed by the company Applied Information to connect traffic signals, emergency vehicles and school zone safety flashers to the Internet of Things.
The free Glance TravelSafely mobile app connects drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to each other and to the infrastructure, with the aim of improving transportation safety in the areas covered by the technology, and the Glance Smart City Supervisory platform allows efficient urban traffic management.
Some of the main features of the system are the following:
- Priority for emergency vehicles and green lights at intersections (the app sends a notification to its user of the approaching vehicle, and it also warns users about vehicles approaching at dangerous speed and trajectory);
- 46 intersections, 5 school zones, 9 pedestrian crossing paths and 24 traffic communications corridors will be connected and will be able to communicate with the city’s traffic control centre to monitor the signals and data remotely;
- Drivers receive a notification if they are about to cross a red signal and they are also provided with the colour of the light at the next traffic signal;
- The app users that are driving are notified when they enter a school zone and receive a warning to reduce speed limit if necessary.
Improved Intelligent Transport Systems.
Description of the specific objectives:
- Improve traffic management;
- Enhance safety and mobility, thus improving quality of life.
