Cool Roof for a National School (Lima - Peru)
Cool Roof for a National School (Lima - Peru)
In 2011, the Ministry of Environment (MINAM) and the Ministry of Education (MINEDU) of Peru carried out the Project Ecolegios Sustainable Architecture, to assess the relation between academic performance and room temperature in Peruvian schools countrywide. The study concluded that ideal results are reached at 23 ºC. But the reality of Peru’s national schools is very far from that: 32 ºC in average, which limits performance by about 40%. Thermal comfort is essential at school, therefore a solution was put in place to address this problem.
In Lima, the company Masprotecto worked in partnership with the Peruvian National School n° 101 Shuji Kitamura and its Parent-Teacher Association to develop a project to protect the school’s roof from the effects of intensive rain and sunshine: the first Cool Roof.
Two classrooms, a library and an auditorium were coated with the special material, after appropriate preparation. More cost-efficient than the Green Roof, the white Cool Roof is waterproof and at the same time it reduces the internal temperature of the building dramatically by improving its insulation. Using this system, public and residential buildings can reduce the use of air-conditioning and, consequently, avoid greenhouse gas emissions.

Improved Energy management.
Description of the specific objectives:
- Reduce energy use and costs, and avoid greenhouse gas emissions;
- Prevent the heat island effect by reflecting the solar energy instead of absorbing and transferring heat to the building, thus contributing to lower outside air temperatures;
- Improve air quality and human health conditions through a cooler air temperature.
