CPH 2025 Climate Plan (Copenhagen - Denmark)
CPH 2025 Climate Plan (Copenhagen - Denmark)
In 2009, the Climate Plan for Copenhagen was approved and adopted by the City Council to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2015 (target already met in 2011) and to state the vision of becoming carbon neutral by 2025. In 2012, the final CPH 2025 Climate Plan was closed with specific guidelines towards carbon neutrality.
The climate actions that are being undertaken are distributed by four main areas of action, each one with specific goals and initiatives: energy consumption, energy production, mobility, and City Administration initiatives.
Some sustainable and green urban solutions adopted by the city and their impact:
- Integrated transport and cycling solutions (1 billion DKK have been invested in bicycle lanes and cycling highways since 2005) have improved mobility conditions and reduced traffic congestion. Daily, about 45% of the citizens use their bicycle to go to work or to school;
- The harbour was cleaned (citizens can even swim in it), leading to more attractive urban areas, a better quality of life, enhanced local business, and more jobs and revenue;
- The district heating system is very efficient and connects 98% of all households in Copenhagen. The district cooling system is also very efficient, using harbour water and saving up to 70% of the energy compared to normal air-conditioning systems.
The City of Copenhagen was already able to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% since 1995.
Improved solid waste management;
Improved Bio-Waste management;
Improved Water management;
Improved Energy management.
