Sharing Cities (Lisbon, London, Milan, Bordeaux, Burgas, Warsaw - European Countries)
The Sharing Cities “lighthouse” programme was launched in 2016 and it will be developed over the course of 60 months. Sharing Cities received over €24 million from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Its approach is focused on international cooperation between cities as a means to build smart cities together, scaling up common solutions to shared problems.
The “Lighthouse” cities (Lisbon, London, and Milan) will have demonstration districts in which commercially scalable smart urban solutions with potential for replication will be implemented, while the “Fellow” cities (Bordeaux, Burgas, and Warsaw) will help in the co-development, validation, or implementation of these solutions.
Key activities are focused on three pillars: place (solutions for low-energy districts, sustainable integrated energy management systems, e-car sharing, e-bikes, e-vehicle chargers, smart parking, e-logistics, retrofitting of buildings, and smart lamp posts with sensors for traffic management and Wi-Fi), people (smart city services centred on the user’s experience and co-designed with the citizens, sharing services layer, and district bond scheme), and platform (urban sharing platform based on open data to promote citizen engagement).
One of the main aims of the project is to engage 100 other cities across Europe and generate €500 million in private capital investment.
Some of the activities that were launched in 2017 and are currently being developed are: building retrofit in Milan (a deep renovation of multi-property buildings with a 60% reduction in energy consumption and integration of renewable energies in the infrastructure); e-bike sharing system in Lisbon (a complete system that includes docks widespread all over the city, a mobile app, and 1,410 bikes, 940 of which are electric bicycles. The pilot phase involved 4,583 people); business models in London (a series of business and financial models that help cities to suitably scale up their projects and approach the marketplace for replication in other contexts).
