Stellenbosch Innovation District (Stellenbosch - South Africa)
Stellenbosch Innovation District is a knowledge economy hub that supports the development of innovative solutions to face urban, social, economic, and environmental challenges. The aim of the project is to transform the city of Stellenbosch into a smart and sustainable urban settlement by 2020 and develop a culture of collaboration in the community.
Some of the projects that have been developed already are: iShack (a solar panels installation project for shacks in Enkanini), Sustainable Brothers (a project to create sustainable living strategies through research, collaboration, and networking), E-khaya (a low cost, durable, safe structure that incorporates sustainable technologies for people living in slums); Space Age Technologies – “Relevant IT” (a project to help leaders use IT strategically to grow their business); Eduvate (a project that focuses on education trough innovation); TakeAction (a social initiative that allows citizens to report all kinds of urban issues related to security, infrastructure, and maintenance); Toboil (implement a new biofuel crop – Solaris or “Energy Tobacco” – in South Africa for the production of fuel and animal food); and Qurio.co (a project that helps users get insights from their audience, employees, or customers).
