Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan by population (3,732,616), after Tokyo, and the most populous municipality of Japan. It is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture. It lies on Tokyo Bay, south of Tokyo, in the Kantō region of the main island of Honshu.

It is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area.

The city has a strong economic base, especially in the shipping, biotechnology, and semiconductor industries. Nissan moved its headquarters to Yokohama from Chūō, Tokyo in 2010.

Toyota is a city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. As of May 2015, the city had an estimated population of 420,076. It is located about 35 minutes from Nagoya by way of the Meitetsu Toyota Line.

Several of Toyota Motor Corporation's manufacturing plants, including the Tsutsumi plant, are located here. The longstanding ties between the Toyota Motor Corporation and the town of Toyota-shi, formerly known as Koromo, gave the town its current name.

Kitakyushu is one of two designated cities in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, together with Fukuoka, with a population of just under 1 million people.

Located close to other Asian countries, Kitakyushu has thrived as a gateway to Asia due to its convenient location between Tokyo and Shanghai and as an industrial base in Japan.

The Kitakyushu Smart Community Project was developed in the Higashida district from 2010 to 2014 (5 years), comprising 26 projects and a budget of JPY 12 billion, with the aim of developing a more sustainable and low-carbon society. This Town Development project was developed around 5 concepts:

Started in 2010, Smart MELIT (acronym for Smart Mobility and Energy Life In Toyota) is Toyota City’s low carbon society verification project that aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote a healthy environment for people and vehicles to coexist. Energy use is reduced in residential, commercial and public buildings, and sustainable urban transportation is facilitated.

Yokohama Green Valley is the city’s concept to rapidly promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and foster economic revitalisation by developing an industry focused on environment and improving environmental education through collaboration with citizens.
