Suceava is the largest city and the seat of Suceava County, in the historical region of Bukovina, situated in north-eastern Romania. It is a significant economic urban centre of the Romanian Nord-Est development region. The city has an estimated population of 116,404 people (2016) and a larger metropolitan population of 176,016.

The GrowSmarter “lighthouse” programme was launched in January 2015 and it will be developed until December 2019. GrowSmarter received €25 million funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
