Drones for laboratory samples delivery (Lugano - Switzerland)

In Lugano, Switzerland, a partnership between Swiss Post, EOC hospital group and the drone manufacturer Matternet was established to deliver laboratory samples and urgently needed medication between two hospitals (Ospedale Italiano and Ospedale Civico) using drones. More than 100 test flights have already been operated since the beginning of the project in March 2017.

Because they are not affected by traffic congestion and allow a fast transportation time they are the perfect option for emergency situations. The hospitals’ staff receive training to properly handle the quadrocopter drones and the mobile app used to operate them.

The first set of test flights required manual loading of the safety transportation box (which follows all legislations for transport of biological substances), but the future procedure will be completely automated, using a logistics station from Matternet. Each drone can transport materials that weigh up to 2 kg, has a maximum range of 20 km, and flies at an average speed of 72 km/h. The drones are equipped with extra sensors and a parachute in case of electronic failure.
