Lugano, Switzerland

Lugano is a city in southern Switzerland in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino bordering Italy. It has a population (as of December 2016) of 63,932, and an urban agglomeration of over 145,000. The city lies on Lake Lugano, surrounded by the mountains of the Lugano Prealps.

Following on from the establishment of Ticino University (1996), many specialised research institutes arrived, including the new Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, and this has allowed Lugano to play a key role in research and in the knowledge society.

Lugano is the economic center of the region, and Lugano is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Switzerland. Business, tourism and finance have been crucial parts of the local economy.
