Pune is a city located in the state of Maharashtra in western India. It is the second largest city in the state after the state capital, Mumbai. A pride of the Peshwas, the city was an epicentre of the Maratha Empire in the 18th century. Considered to be the cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune is known as "Oxford of the East" due to the presence of several well-known educational institutions in the city. The city has emerged as a major educational hub in recent decades, with nearly half of the total international students in the country studying in Pune. Since the 1950s and 1960s, Pune has had a traditional old-economic base as most of the old industries continue to grow. The city is known for its manufacturing and automobile industries, as well as for research institutes of information technology (IT), education, management and training, which attracts students from all over the world.

By Air – 10 kms away from the city, Pune International Airport (PNQ) in Lohegaon serves the city.
By Rail - Pune Junction, Ghorpuri, Shivajinagar, Dapodi and Hadapsar are the railway junctions in the city. A metro rail project is proposed in the city.
By Road - The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation runs buses from Pune to other major cities of the country. PMPML offers the public transport service in the Pune Metropolitan region.
